The recent World Summit On Sustainable
Development arrived at the following conclusions:
The main driving force behind the current rapid
implementation of ASR technology around the
world is water supply economics.

one third of the world will be critically short
of water in 21st century
•
rate of water use is rising at twice the rate
of population growth
•
aim to increase water security, reduce
losses, improve use efficiency, and
increase recycling
•
Increasing storage has value, especially
due to increased variability of rainfall
•
Subsurface storage has advantages over
surface storage (land not lost, water quality
protection, no evaporation, algae, or
mosquitoes, cost)
