GEOTHERMAL HEATING
AND COOLING SYSTEMS
Atlas Copco Water Well Drills
Let’s begin this course by being clear on the names
we will use throughout this presentation.
This presentation will be an introduction to the
method of installation and operation of heating and
cooling systems that use the earth as a “heat
source” and a “heat sink.”  In the past these types
of “ground source” or “ground based” systems
have been called geothermal systems, and they still
often are known by that name.
But some confusion can arise because geothermal
is also the term used to describe the technology
that harnesses heated water or steam that comes
from the depths of the earth and is used to generate
electricity or provide a direct heat source.
Sometimes the following explanation is used to
distinguish between these separate types of
“geothermal energy.”
